In a theatre, the Stage Manager introduces the audience to the rural town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire (USA) and its inhabitants: the Gibbs and Webb families, who are neighbours, and especially Emily Webb and George Gibbs, who soon fall in love and marry. The play follows the changes in this couple’s life over the course of 12 years.
